SAUMITRA CHAUDHURI has been a Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, since January 2005.

He is also Economic Advisor with ICRA Limited – a full service credit rating agency, and an associate of Moody’s Investors Service.

Education

Basic degree education in Science; studied economics at the Centre for Economic Studies & Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Economic Advisor & Research Co-ordinator since early 1993 and responsible for research in contemporary economic developments and policy formulation. Member of company’s Rating Committee and the Executive Editor of the periodical publication – Money & Finance.

Government of India

  1. Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (since Jan.2005),
  2. Chairman of the Committee for Formulation of All Industry Rates of Duty Drawback 2007/2008, 2006/07 and in 2005/06 in the Ministry of Finance.
  3. Chairman of the Committee to Review the ADR/GDR/FCCB Scheme, Finance Ministry [May 2007 to January 2008].
  4. Member of the High Level Committee on Estimation of Savings & Investments set up in December 2007 and continuing.
  5. Member of the high-powered Inter-Ministerial Committee set up to examine pricing and taxation issues for petroleum products [Oct. 2005 to Feb. 2006].

He is also Member of the Advisory Board of Fixed Income Money Market & Derivatives Association of India (FIMMDA). Ha has been peer reviewer for the World Bank report on Punjab (2002/03). Worked with ICRIER (Indian Council for Research in International Economic Relations) on an industrial development plan for Orissa (2001: UNIDO & DFID) and on a report on the Indian Pharmaceutical industry (2002: World Bank).). Consultant on the World Bank Cotton Sector Study: Cotton Yarn Spinning, 1996; World Bank’s Resident Mission in Bangladesh on a study on labour costs in select industries, 1994; and World Bank’s Steel Mission in India, 1986.
